Which areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction (lipo) is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures for both men and women. This procedure involves surgically removing fat in an effort to sculpt your:

  • Thighs and hips
  • Buttocks (banana roll)
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest area and armpits
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Back, including the bra line

You can even get liposuction to get rid of that dreaded double chin, contour your cheeks, and give you a more defined jawline.

Can liposuction help me lose weight?

No. While it’s normal to experience some weight loss with liposuction because you’re having fatty tissue removed, it isn’t an alternative to weight loss.

Liposuction provides optimal results when you already have a diet and exercise plan in place and just have some stubborn spots that won’t budge. It’s generally reserved for men and women who are within 30% of their ideal body weight.

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

As an expert cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Jones spends time with you discussing your entire liposuction procedure so you know what to expect. Lipo is performed on an outpatient basis under either local or general anesthesia, depending on your specific procedure and overall health.

Dr. Jones begins by making a few small incisions in your treatment area. He uses a cannula, which is a long, thin, hollow tube, to gently loosen fat in a back-and-forth motion. Once the fat is dislodged, Dr. Jones simply suctions it away with a surgical vacuum.

How long does it take to recover from liposuction?

Usually, you have to wear a compression garment after liposuction to minimize swelling and compress your skin. You might also need temporary drains in place to help excess fluid escape. Dr. Jones finds that most men and women can return to many of their usual activities within a week.

It can take several months for swelling to completely subside and for you to have a full recovery. But with each passing day, your skin tightens up and you continue noticing the more-defined contours your have.
